OBITUARY - MARTINSBURG JOURNAL - Monday, March13, 1916

MR. J. T. HOPPER SUDDENLY EXPIRES - Well Known TownsmanSuccumbs to Heart Trouble.
Mr. James T. Hopper, the well-known retired storekeeper andDemocratic registar, died suddenly at 3:30 o'clock this morningat his home, 412 East Moler avenue, aged 69 years, six monthsand 13 days. Death was due to heart trouble and came withoutwarning, the deceased expiring within a few minutes after beingstricken. He had been in poor health for several years, onprevious occasions has suffered spells. Saturday night hesustained a similar stroke, but seemed to be much better Sundayand the family had no apprehensions, thinking he would recoveras at other times. However, during the night the death angelpassed over the house and the father of the family was summonedhence. The funeral will be held from the late home at 2:30o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Dr. H. P. Hamill, pastor ofTrinity M.E. Church, South, of which denomination the deceasedwas a life long member, will officiate, Rev. R. W. Grizzard,pastor of Second Baptist Church will assist, and the remainswill be interred in Green Hill, Cemetery, Berkeley Co, WVA.
Mr. Hopper was born in Little Washington, Rappahannock county,Va., Sept. 16, 1847, and spent his younger days in thatsection. He first engaged in the sewing machine business andwhen a young man visited Shepherdstown, near where he met andmarried Miss Fannie Etchison, who died a few years afterwards.Later he married Miss Marietta Sprinkle, daughter of the lateMr. and Mrs. Welcome Sprinkle, of near Greensburg, who surviveshim with one son, by his first wife, Mr. Edgar Hopper, ofCharlottesville, Va., and three children by the last marriage,Mr. Elmer M. Hopper, of North High street; Mrs. LorennaBrenner and Mr. Conrad L. Hopper, at home. He is also survivedby one sister, Mrs. Alice Jett, wife of Rev. W.A.L. Jett, anEpiscopal minister at Murray Hill, N.J., the last of a familyof 15 children.
Mr. Hopper came to Martinsburg and for 20 some years conducted astore on Moler avenue, retiring five or six years since becauseof ill health. He was a stalwart Democrat and a courtlygentleman of the old school, and an intelligent and well readman. For years he had been registar at the precinct and in thepast week had completed the work of registaring the precinctvote. His death is a great shock to the family and friends.

OBITUARY - MARTINSBURG JOURNAL - Friday,November 28, 1919

MRS. M.C. HOPPER SUDDENLY EXPIRES - Wednesday evening thefamily of Mrs. Marietta C. Hopper, 412 Moler Avenue, joyfullyanticipated a family reunion on Thanksgiving day. Thisestimable lady and her daughter had concluded lovingpreparations for the occasion and her step-son had arrived fromWashington to be present at the proverbial happy dinner.Yesterday morning when the sun arose Mrs. Hopper lay asleep indeath. The end came suddenly earlier in the morning. Mrs.Hopper arose about 4:45 o'clock complaining of a suffocatingsensation and evidently realized the approach of the end, forshe suddenly exclaimed to her children that she believed shewas going to die. In ten minutes the gentle spirit had fledand Dr. E. H. Bitner, who had been quickly summoned, pronouncedlife extinct and human aid futile. Death was due to heartfailure. Although in good spirits and apparently well andactive up until last night, Mrs. Hopper had been in delicatehealth for several years.
Mrs. Hopper was born near Greensburg, and was a daughter of thelate Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Sprinkle. She had spent her entirelife in this county and city, and was preceded to the graveabout four years ago by her husband, the late J. T. Hopper, formany years a highly esteemed resident of Martinsburg and longin the grocery business on Moler avenue. She was a woman oflovely Christian character, perfectly devoted to her childrenand beloved by them.
Surviving are three children, Mr. Elmer M. Hopper, a well knownlino type operator at the Journal office; Mrs. Lorena Brennerat home, and Mr. Conrad Hopper, of the Interwoven shippingdepartment and one stepson, Mr. Stephen Edgar Hopper ofWashington. One brother, Mr. Z. T. Sprinkle, of New Yorkcity, and one sister, Mrs. Damie Grantham, of Hale City , Mo.She is also survivied by a large number of family connectionsin the city and county.
The funeral will be held from the late home Sunday afternoon at2:30 o'clock. Her pastor, Rev. J. R. Jacobs, of TrinityMethodist Episcopal Church South will officate, assisted byRev. R. W. Grizzard, pastor of Second Baptist church and closefriend of the family. The interment will be made in GreenHill, Cemetery, Berkeley Co, WVA.
