Text:   161. James Polk5 Fancher (James4, Richard3, Benjamin2, Richard1), born in Osage, Ark., 13 Oct 1842, died in Berryville, Ark., 16 Oct. 1924. He married in Boone County, Ark., 2 July 1869 Susan E. Crump, daughter of John Grey and Eliza (Watkins) Crum, born in Mt. Pleasant, Ky., 22 Feb. 1845; d. in Berryville 11 April 1884.
James Polk Fancher served as sergeant in Co. E. 1st Ark. Bat. Cavalry and Infantry, in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, enlisting in March 1861 and surrendered in June 1865. He was elected circuit clerk 1872-1876; was a representative in teh state legislature in 1885; United States Special Indian Deportation and Disbursing Agent 1888 and 1889; County Clerk 1892-1898 and county judge in 1920. He sought to secure compensation from the United States government for the survivors of the Mountain Meadow Massacre of 1857. Lawyer and member Masons, Knight Templar, I.O. O. F., K. of P., and W. O. W.

iii. Alice Barnes, b. in Carrollton, 27 April 1874; d. in Las Animas, Colo., 4 May 1933; m. (1) in 1891, John D. Arnette; m. (2) in 1918 Harold Smallwood. Five children by first husband.
iv. Grace, b. in Berryville, 10 Aug 1877; d. there 12 Aug. 1879.
v. Mary Gerthude, b. in Berryville, 21 Sept. 1880; m. in Green Forest, 25 Nov. 1903, William A. Spalding. Six children.
vi. James Polk (Twin), b. in Berryville, 8 June 1883; d. there 22 Sept. 1883.

Text:   6. Captain Richard2 Fancher (Richard1) was born in New Canaan (?) Conn., 17 August 1731, the twin of Martha Fancher, and both were Baptised in the New Canaan Congregational Church 28 July 1734. Richard Fancher died in Roxbury, N. J., 25 March 1778. He married in Morris County, N. J. 20 Feb. 1753, Sarah Douglas, who was born 27 Jan, 1735. Sara (Douglas) Fancher married, 22 Oct. 1785, Jacob Davidse Schuyler, father of 12 children, three of his children marrying three of her children by Richard Fancher. Richard Fancher's name appears on the Philadelphia Militia Rolls at Harrisburg, Penn. In the inventory of Richard Fancher in the State House Vault, Trenton, N. J., he is called "Captain" Richard Fancher. Records of the births of children are taken from a Bible in the possession of Dr. Walter E. Fancher of Yonker, N. Y., dated MDCCCVIII, and from family records by James R. Clark, printed by Mathew Carey.
