He lived in Overton County until 1843, in Osage, Ark., until 1846 and White County, Tenn., until his death. Hew was a Mason, in Sparta, Tenn., lodge.
Thomas Hampton Fancher was tall and slender, a born fighter and uncompromising. He had only six months of schooling, his only fook for reading was the Bible, yet he became able to read, write and transact all his business. He was in law cases and carried three cases to the state supreme court. The Civil War left him with only an unfenced an unstocked farm and a mill , but after the war he made a good living. Fancher acquired a mill property ten miles west of Sparta, Tenn., in 1856 and rebuilt the mill. The mill was burned in 1858 and a miller, who had a mill four miles away, was set to the penitentiary for the burning, grain having been stolenfrom the mill and the property burned, all to discourage competition. The great 18 foot water wheel was saved and the mill was rebuilt.
On the death of Thomas Hampton Fancher, his son operated the mill until 1912, then it was conveyed to Thomas H. Fancher Jr., who was the owner until 1936 and in 1941 it came into the possession of the latter's son, James Donald Fancher. Thomas H. Fancher had a negro slave, John, who fought in the Union Army. Fancher was named for a silver smith, Thomas Hampton, whomhe greatly admired. Several children by his first wife died in infancey.
