Text: 29 1/2. Richard3 Fancher (David2, Richard1), born in 1756, possibly on Long Island, N. Y., died in Overton County, Tenn., 21 May 1829. He married, in Spottsylvania County, VA., in 1785, Sarah Journegin, Born in Spottsylvania County in 1765 and died in Osage, Ark., 5 Oct. 1839, being blind. (possibly born Patsy Gray and connected with the Bynums of N. C.)
Richard Fancher served seven years in the Revolution. He was a private in Capt. Thomas Berry's Company, Col. Abraham Bowman's Eighth Regiment, of Virginia and entered service 1 March 1777. He is peproted sick in Carolina 2 Sept. 1777. He was under Gen. Francis Marion part of the time. Was at the battle of Fort Moultrie in Charleston Harbor. Family tradition states he was with Sergeant Jasper at Fort Moultrie when he retrieved the flag and held it in place until the pole could be spliced. This was by some supposed to be for sentmental reasons, but Richard Fancher said he understood the city was to be burned if the flag went down and by holding the flag in place the city was saved from being burned. He was in some Indian skirmishes in North Carolina following the Revolution.
