Text: 6. Captain Richard2 Fancher (Richard1) was born in New Canaan (?) Conn., 17 August 1731, the twin of Martha Fancher, and both were Baptised in the New Canaan Congregational Church 28 July 1734. Richard Fancher died in Roxbury, N. J., 25 March 1778. He married in Morris County, N. J. 20 Feb. 1753, Sarah Douglas, who was born 27 Jan, 1735. Sara (Douglas) Fancher married, 22 Oct. 1785, Jacob Davidse Schuyler, father of 12 children, three of his children marrying three of her children by Richard Fancher. Richard Fancher's name appears on the Philadelphia Militia Rolls at Harrisburg, Penn. In the inventory of Richard Fancher in the State House Vault, Trenton, N. J., he is called "Captain" Richard Fancher. Records of the births of children are taken from a Bible in the possession of Dr. Walter E. Fancher of Yonker, N. Y., dated MDCCCVIII, and from family records by James R. Clark, printed by Mathew Carey.

Died intestate. Wife Sarah was appointed administrator by the Court, together with Aaron and John Starke, his friends and neighbors. On the inventory, Richard is referred to as "Captain", for a reason that has yet to be determined. Perhaps it was a gratuitous title if he had engaged in commerce on the Black River which flowed by his property; there is no record of him having served in the military. The inventory list, totaling 860.12 pounds indicates Richard was a relatively prosperous farmer. Although no tombstone marks his grave today, Richard was probably buried in the church cemetery beside the road leading to his property. Six weeks after his death, his sons Joshua and John conveyed 111 acres in Roxbury Township to his wife Sarah, who sold it to their son James for 200 pounds 16 years later.
