| Captain James Lynch rescued the surviving children from Mormon home; escorted them back to Arkansas; visited them during the next 35 years; and married survivor Sarah Dunlap when he was 74 years and she was 38. He is buried beside his little Sarah in the Hampton Church of Christ Cemetery in Calhoun County, Arkansas. |
| It was reported that he expedited the recovery of the surviving children by pulling a gun on Jacob Hamblin and threatening to "send him to Purgatory" if he didn't stop lying about the whereabouts of the children. He was the survivors most loyal advocate to the end of his life. He refused to eat with John D. Lee even though Dr. Forney joined Lee for dinner at Lee's place. Captain Lynch was critical of Forney's closeness with the Mormons and referred to him as "Old Granny." |
